Coronavirus will return: 7 out of 10 Italians are afraid

Coronavirus - PXR Italy

"Do you fear a new increase in Coronavirus infections in Italy?" was the question asked by PXR Italy to Italians in the latest survey on 13 May. The result is that more than 6 out of 10 people (66.2%) are afraid that the number of infections could increase again. Let's ask ourselves: 1. are contagions really decreasing? 2. is there a possibility of a second wave (will the Coronavirus return)?

Are infections really decreasing?

Yes, infections are decreasing in Italy. The data collected by the Ministry of Health, which can be easily consulted on the website of Il Sole 24 Ore, says it all: the ratio between swabs taken and people who are positive to the Coronavirus is decreasing day by day. To give an idea, since 30 April about 2 out of every 100 people who take the swab have tested positive; it should be considered that the number of tests carried out on the population is increasing, while the number of positives is decreasing day by day. On the other hand, Health Minister Roberto Speranza warns Italians, admitting that "The situation is better than in the past, but we are still in it" (source: 'Mezz'ora in più' interview on Rai Tre). Hence the second question.

There is a possibility of a second wave: will the Coronavirus return?

For this question too, the answer is a clear 'Yes'. This is supported by a number of sources, starting with the leading figures in Italian healthcare. Gualtiero Ricciardi, the Italian representative on the WHO council and former president of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, admits that a second autumn wave of the coronavirus is 'more than a hypothesis, it is a certainty' (source: The Huffington Post). This view is also supported by Dr. Amesh Adalja, infectivologist at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University (source: Los Angeles Times), and Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the American task force for the containment of the Coronavirus in the USA (source: Open.Online).

In a statement, the specialists in general medicine in Milan and the family doctors themselves used clear and unequivocal tones: 'The phase 2 that people have been waiting for risks being transformed, especially in Milan, into a dangerous and even more lethal second wave of contagions' (source: Emergency.Live). In short, in Italy and around the world there is a serious possibility of a return of the Coronavirus and a new increase in infections: this thesis is also supported by the Institute of Pathogenic Biology of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, whose experts say that "the COVID will not be eliminated, but most likely will return every year, like the flu" (source: AGI).

Conclusions

In short, a second wave of Coronavirus is likely, according to some sources even certain: and PXR Italy has shown that Italians are afraid of it. If it is true that much depends on the efficiency of the health system and the decisions taken in politics, it is equally true that the containment of the Coronavirus depends on the actions of each individual.
